The last two miles were really a struggle. I think some of it may have been knowing that the girls had been sitting and waiting for me for a while, but I think mostly I was just tired.

This is the only long run distance that repeats, so next weekend I'll get a chance to try running 16 again. I hope it goes better!

Pictures:

Bag is packed and ready.

The view upstream from the Lander Rd. boat launch.

Downstream

The green blur is another runner. I actually passed someone! Friday night we got a about an inch of snow which is no big deal, but that was followed by a nice layer of freezing rain which made driving to the canal out of the question. Driving would have been too dangerous and I can't imagine running 14 miles on ice would have been very easy. On a side note, I read about a cool product to help with that called Yaktrax (http://www.yaktrax.com) that I'm going to have to pick up at some point.

I decided to wait until later in the day Saturday and hope that the ice would melt. It didn't. Finally around 11:00 I decided I would just run on the roads and stay on the parts that had been treated. I figured out a 14 mile there and back route through my development and went for it.

Running around where I live and running at the canal aren't anything alike. The canal is flat and soft and running in Windsor Knolls is all pavement and hills. I told myself to ignore my pace and just try to concentrate on staying upright. I managed to complete the entire run without falling, although I came close a couple times.

One highlight of the run was watching people try to clear ice off of their driveways with snow-blowers. I passed one guy four times and he had maybe cleared off a space big enough to put a car in.

Another highlight came at mile 11 when I was starting to really fade. I was coming toward a cross street and my friend Jay ran past. Jay and I ran the Baltimore Half Marathon together and seeing him lifted my spirits considerably. I tried to catch him but our routes didn't match up and I didn't even come close but he provided me some much needed inspiration at just the right time. I texted him later to say thanks.

I finished the run pretty strong and felt great for about 5 minutes. After that I started getting sore. I was surprised at just how sore I was all day after the run. I wore my compression socks which have helped a lot. My legs feel pretty good this morning and I don't think I'll miss any training this week.

No pictures this time. I didn't bring a camera because I was worried about falling and breaking it. This screen capture of my Garmin data is the only picture I really need. If you click on the image it will take you to the Garmin website. Click on the green arrow and you can play the entire run. This should be hours of fun for the whole family.

C&O Canal 12 Mile

Back at the canal again last weekend. I keep thinking that I'll get bored with running here, but so far I am enjoying it more and more. I went back to the "out and back" routine this time. I started at Point of Rocks and ran north-west to Brunswick.

Two days before running I was in to visit the podiatrist. I've been suffering from a lot of pain in my right Achilles tendon and wanted to get it checked out. The doctor was none to pleased when she asked me to describe my pre-run stretching regimen and I replied with "none". So, I've been stretching the tendons religiously ever since and I have already noticed an improvement. I guess doctors aren't all complete idiots.

So with my legs feeling a lot less pain I trotted off down the trail for a couple hours. I brought a camera along again this time and took a few shots. It's kind of funny that I only stopped once to try and get a good shot at the Catoctin Aqueduct and it turned out very blurry. The rest of them I just slowed down a little and snapped pictures while I ran.

It was quite cold this week, but I was prepared with a freshly purchased hoodlum mask. It must have been quite intimidating because I encountered a guy with big scary dog who took one look at me and ran the other way. It was most likely just a coincidence that he chose that particular moment to turn and start jogging the other way, but I enjoyed pretending to be intimidating for a couple miles. Eventually he ran out of steam and walked off one of the side trails. I still had 3 miles to go.

Parking lot at Point of Rocks. The water was very high!

CSX train headed up the tracks.

and into the tunnel. (Source: http://mcmullans.org/canal/lock_28.htm)

After passing the lock house I kept looking for the Route 15 bridge, which is right next to where I parked. I decided that I would sprint as best I could to the bridge and then allow myself to walk if I hadn't hit 12 miles by then. I passed under the bridge moving at a somewhat less than glacial pace and my watch said 11.95 so I kept going until I hit the parking lot.

I was quite pleased when I looked at the data from my watch. I ran an average time of 9:31. I keep edging closer to four hour marathon time. I don't want to allow myself to even hope for that kind of time at the race. I'll just keep at it and see where I end up.

Next week will be a big challenge. I am scheduled to run 14 miles which will be .9 miles further than I have ever run before. If Cindi is available to drive me, I will run from Point of Rocks to White's Ferry.

Time to log off here and go for a six miler around the neighborhood. Cheers!

Week Four - 11 Miles at the Canal

The training plan called for an 11 mile long run yesterday. We have been experiencing some really nice weather in my area the last few days and I was happy that the warm streak would continue through Saturday. Of course at 8:30 in the morning it's still pretty cold, but the sun was out and I was ready to go.

The thing that made this run fun was that I didn't have to do an out and back. Instead, Cindi said she would pick me up at White's Ferry and drive me back to the car. I REALLY liked the idea of just running in one direction and not having to turn around and go back. I checked the map and found what I thought would be the perfect run. Noland's Ferry to White's Ferry. According to my calculations it would be about 10.5 miles. The plan was just to run past White's Ferry for about a 1/4 and then turn around. No problem.

Except that my calculations were all wrong. I got to White's Ferry and my Garmin said it was only 8.8 miles! Arriving at what I expected to be the finish line only to learn that I still had more than two miles to go was a bit disheartening but I tried not to let it inside my head too much. Sometimes I tend to react rather badly when things don't go according to plan, but I did a pretty good job of just putting it out of my head. I ran the extra mile past White's Ferry and turned around. When I got back I found Cindi waiting for me. I was also greeted by a black lab with a stick that he wanted me to throw.

Sorry, no picture this time. I didn't bring Lauren's camera and I didn't break out the phone for pictures because I wanted to run the entire distance without stopping. I accomplished that goal and also experimented a little with some energy gel. I was trying Gu, Espresso Love; I liked the tasted even though it was a bit sweet. I had a little bit of indigestion afterward but that's probably because I didn't drink enough water with it. I did feel my energy level rise a little a few minutes after taking it in so I'm going to continue to experiment with that.

I hope do do a similar run next week, but I'll have to employ better calculations. Maybe it's time to dust off the slide rule?

Weeks Two and Three

I haven't updated the blog for a couple weeks. I know my readers (both of you) have been on the edge of your seats waiting for an update and I do apologize for keeping you waiting.

Since my last update I've been on two long runs at the Canal. An 8 miler that I quite enjoyed and a 10 miler that I enjoyed but struggled with at the end. I was a little surprised that the latter run gave me as much trouble as it did. Looking back, I think my diet is at least partially to blame for that.

8 Mile Run, Christmas Eve
I started at the Mouth of the Monocacy parking lot and ran down stream. Like I said above, I really enjoyed this run a lot. I had never been on this part of the canal before and I always like seeing new things. A big highlight of the run for me was coming across a blue heron. I stopped and took a couple pictures of it. I was surprised that it let me get as close as I did without reacting. After I took the last shot I jogged off and it just watched me go without moving.

On my return trip, I came across the same bird again but this time it was up in a tree. It flew off when I came around a corner. It's wingspan was enormous. I wasn't able to get a picture of that.

10 Mile Run, New Years Eve
Running the week before, I passed a parking lot that I didn't know about. I went home and looked it up on Google Maps and found out that it was Dickerson Conservation Park. I decided to start my run there so could explore more of the trail. The park was kind of creepy early in the morning. There isn't anything there at all aside from the parking lot which was empty when I arrived. I felt uncomfortable there and I doubt I will start anymore runs from this point.

I headed downstream again this week and made it all the way to (and past) White's Ferry which I had never visited before. I felt pretty good for about the first 6 miles or so. The last four were something of a struggle. I'm fighting off a bit of a cold and I wasn't eating very well the night before so those are both contributing factors.

This time I took a small camera with me and snapped some shots as I ran. I didn't notice that the date stamp was turned on and displaying the wrong date until the end of the run.

I used the camera to distract myself and took a few shots here and there. I surprised a couple of runners coming the other way, but they didn't seem to mind. The big reward came at the end of the run when I followed a trail across from where I parked that took me out to the rivers edge for a really nice view of the river.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; In the hope that I can make my runs a little more entertaining, I plan to start running in different sections of the trail as much as possible. This time I parked at Point of Rocks and ran up-stream. I only went seven miles this week but it seemed further for some reason.

There were a few sights to see along the way which was welcome. The shutter speed on my phone's camera is pretty much crap, so trying to snap pictures without stopping doesn't work. My old phone was a bit better at this. Maybe I'll invest a few bucks in a cheap camera to carry with me.

I'm trying to get into the habit of stopping once in a while to take a picture or have a drink. My reasoning behind this is that I want to get used to starting back up again after I stop. I think this is important for two reasons. First is that I plan to have FUN on this marathon. I'm not out to set any records or to prove that I can run all 26.2 miles without a single break. If I see something interesting I want to stop and take a picture of it, or high five a spectator or thank a volunteer, etc. The other reason is more practical. I'm a mouth breather. My sinuses are complete crap and there isn't anything I can do about it. Consequently, I have a tough time drinking and running at the same time. So when I hit the water/Gatorade tables I plan to stop and drink and fill up my bottles so I can take little sips as I go.

Here are a few pictures from this run:

See the smile? This is fun, right?

The Potomac river is really beautiful. There are a few places where you can go down to the water's edge but I don't usually make time for that. I'll try to work that in next week.

The C&O Railroad runs right next to the old tow path. There is usually one or two trains headed down the track on Saturday mornings when I run. They are loud but it makes for a nice diversion.

This is one I tried to capture without stopping. The first was that I didn't realize that I was already supposed to be training! Somehow I got it in my head that my training plan was only ten weeks when it was actually sixteen. When I grabbed a calendar and started counting I discovered that I only have fourteen weeks until the race I panicked just a little. OK, maybe more than just a little.

After I read everything through again I realized that the training plan I'm using is for true rookies. I haven't run a full marathon before, but I'm in decent shape. The first two weeks, the long runs were only five and six miles so I'm actually not behind at all. If anything, I'm ahead of schedule. My long run this weekend will only be seven miles which I know I can do so all is well.

I'm fortunate enough to have a lot of people in my life that want me to succeed at this and I'm friends with a few people that have run marathons before. I'm sure I will turn to all of those people for encouragement and advice as I move through this.

I plan to do as many of my long runs at the C&O Canal as possible. I'll be there this Saturday. :-)

Also, I wrote a silly caption for a picture on the ChristmasTown Dash's Facebook page and was one of a dozen people to win an ornament. It arrived in the mail yesterday.

Registered

I registered for the race today. I guess that means I actually have to do it. Now I'm nervous.

ChristmasTown Dash 2011

It's been a couple weeks since we ran, but I need to follow up on the ChristmasTown Dash 8K that Logan and I ran together.

The race was a lot of fun! Logan was pretty nervous going into it because he didn't train much leading up to the race. In fact, he didn't run at all until just 11 days before the big day! Like a lot of people, he often underestimates what he is capable of and this was no exception. On our two or three mile training runs he would often tell me that he didn't think he could do it. It was difficult to convince him what I already knew, that he was more than capable of being ready to run the race in time if he just put in the work. Our entire training plan was simple; run at least two miles every other day.

To make a long story short, he did great! He even took off and beat me by about five seconds at the end.

In the days after the race, I have been taking it easy. My right ankle has been sore and I need to get healed up before I start training for the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach in March. I've been keeping my runs to 3 miles with at least one rest day in between. On January First I'll start the 10 week training schedule. Until then, I'll rest as much as I can stand it.

Pictures of the CTD:

Pre-race. text-align: center;">

but in truth, most of the run looks like this:

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sr8fjWqqOEE/TsqLPRAsN7I/AAAAAAAAAig/nBjd4YOOLDY/s1600/canal1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I live at the bottom of a pretty long hill, so every run starts out with that thing in the way. I got to the top of the hill and checked my watch and saw that my pace was very slow at about 11:30. I decided to pick it up a little and the next thing I know I'm feeling really good. By the time I hit the 1 mile mark my pace had improved considerably and I was still feeling great. The idea of trying for my personal best struck me at about the half way mark. It had been such a long time since that idea even occurred to me that I couldn't remember what my PB was so I just started going as fast as I could.

In the end, I didn't come close to my PB (off by about 45 seconds) but still ran my fastest 3 mile time since June of 2010. I'm glad I didn't skip a day or turn around when I wanted to. I think I'm going to run it again today, but I'm not going to try for the PB again. At least I don't think I will. :-)

Since my planned eight mile run yesterday didn't work out entirely, I went ahead and got in a 3.5 mile run at Lake Centennial this morning. I took a few pictures along the way. Airy is a tough place to run. I don't know the area as well as I used to and there aren't any really long roads you can follow that aren't either too busy, too narrow or both. No matter where you run in that area you'll find lots of hills. Check out the elevation chart on the Training Log link for this run! To make the hills feel hillier it was really windy which made the cold feel colder. I can't say I enjoyed it very much.

Oh well, lesson learned and off to the next one. Logan has a soccer game tomorrow morning in Columbia. I'm thinking about running around Centennial Lake before the game starts to get in a few miles. I need to do a little homework on that first.

Two in a Row

I rarely run two days in a row. My legs need the rest, even when I don't run very far. However the weather has been fantastic yesterday and today so I couldn't help myself. I ran 4 miles yesterday and then ran 3 today. For some reason, the RSS feed that shows my workouts (the My Training Log tab on this page) isn't showing my run from today. I don't know why. If you go to: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/127365384 you can see it is there, but it isn't showing on the feed. I parked my car at the tail end of New Design Road and headed upstream toward Point of Rocks. I had never run in that area before and I really enjoyed the scenery. I stopped a couple times and took pictures. I have never allowed myself to stop during a run before. As part of my new attitude about running I'm trying to be more relaxed. I stopped twice to take pictures and one other time to talk to a guy that was setting up to go dog sledding. Well sort of like dog sledding. The "sled" had wheels on it. I guess it's a kind of training sled they use when there isn't any snow.

Somewhere in the first mile, I almost stepped on a snake that was coiled up on the middle of the path. I don't know anything about snakes so I get pretty freaked out when I come across one by chance. I managed to keep my cool and just kind of went around it. I tried not to think about it too much and kept running, but on the way back I made sure I ran the last mile on the other side of the path!

Born to Run

Late last summer, just before I started running again I read "Born to Run" by Chrisopher McDougall. Reading this book really helped to get me back at it. Runners and sane people alike that are looking for a good read should check this book out. It is very well written and I find a lot of the arguments that Mr. McDougall makes regarding "modern" running shoes quite interesting. I can't say that I have bought into everything that he says in the book. I haven't attempted to convert to barefoot running, at least not yet. I HAVE worked hard to change the mechanics of my running and I have worked hard to change my attitude about running. Mostly I've tried to keep in mind that I run because it is fun. I enjoy it a lot. For me, it's really important to keep in mind that I run because I like to run.

One of the things I've done to try and keep that in focus is to ditch my iPod. If someone suggested that I do that as recently as last Spring I would have said no way. In the past I wouldn't even consider running a 5K that didn't allow headphones. A few months ago I deliberately left the iPod at home when I went on a training run because I wanted to focus on my form and I didn't want any distractions. No iPod, no watch, nothing extra. I found that run to be the most enjoyable experience running that I have had in a long time and I was hooked. I haven't run with the iPod since then and haven't regretted it once. I have gone back to using the watch to keep track of my time and distance. I keep an eye on it while I run to see what my pace is, but I try not to get too caught up in the numbers head games.

Recently my times have been going down. I'm not sure if that is because of the changes I have made or just from the fact that I'm running more. I'm not overly concerned about running at a certain time anymore except from the stand point that when I do actually run in my race I would like to finish in under 5 hours. If I can average a 10:00 mile I'll come in at around 4:35:00 but I plan to stop and enjoy the sites, drink Gatorade at the tables, etc.. so 5 hours is a good goal.

The race isn't until March so I've got some time to wait before I actually start training. Until then I'm just going to keep having fun.

Extended Break

I took a little break from blogging. Actually I took a two year break from blogging. I guess Facebook kinda took over my online sharing like it did for just about everyone else. I'm probably not going to blog very often, but I do want to write down my thoughts about running as I train for my first full marathon.

I have run two half-marathon's. The first one was at the Frederick Running Festival in May of 2010. I didn't enjoy that race very much and I decided that maybe distance running wasn't for me. A few months later I tried to reconsider and get back into it but I started having a lot of problems with Plantar Fasciitis that I struggled with for a long time. I ended up having surgery in February of 2011 that didn't do much to help. I struggled through the Spring and Summer of 2011 not being able to run and being generally unhappy. I gained weight and then I gained some more weight. I spent hundreds of dollars on doctor visits and eventually just gave up on the idea that I would ever be able to run without pain.

Somehow arriving at this conclusion was very liberating. I had been told by my podiatrist that running wasn't going to damage my foot any further (by now they had diagnosed me with arthritis) but that I should expect my foot to hurt every time I ran. So I said to heck with it and decided to try and run some distance. I was surprised that it didn't make much of a difference if I ran 3 miles or 6, the pain was about the same when I got done. So I got into a pattern that worked for me. Run 3 miles on Tuesday and Thursday followed by a long run on Saturday. Ice, ibuprofen and rest for a day or two after. Rinse, repeat.

When I was able to run 8 miles and still mow the lawn afterwards I decided to enter the Baltimore Half Marathon in October. I entered late and had a nervous couple of weeks to see if I would be accepted from the wait list. I decided that even if I wasn't accepted I was going to run 13 miles SOMEWHERE the day of the race so I kept training. I eventually found out that I made it off the wait list and that I would be running with 11,000 of my closest friends through down town Baltimore. I was fortunate enough to have a friend near by that was training for the race too and after we went on a 10 mile training run together we decided to try and meet up at the start line and run together.

As luck would have it we were able to meet a few minutes before the race started. We jogged together through the hilly streets of Baltimore for about two and half hours until we both finished. It was a fun race but as soon as it was finished I started thinking about the idea of running a full. I have always wanted to complete a full marathon and it appears that now is as good a time as any to work it into the schedule.

It's kind of interesting but as I have added more training and more miles over the last couple months my pain has decreased considerably. I still have pain when I wake up and it is sore after long runs but it seems like it is slowly getting better.

I have selected the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach as the race I want to train for. Training through the winter will be difficult. I don't own a treadmill and don't belong to a gym. I enjoy running in the cold but when it snows I will be forced to either alter my training schedule or find a gym and run on a treadmill.

I guess that's about it for now. I'm going to see if there is a Garmin "gadget" that I can hook into this blog so I can post my training runs here too. For now I guess I'll just post links to my "My Garmin" page. Today's run: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/125567500

UPDATE: I figured out how to put a tab at the top of the page that I have cleverly labeled "My Training Log" that will take you to my Garmin site.

If you have any questions or comments, go for it.
